Pageants provide poise, confidence for girls

Published: Thursday, January 27, 2011
Updated: Thursday, January 27, 2011 22:01

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl from Gering, Neb. She hoped to become a lawyer one day, maybe a judge and then some sort of politician. But she gave all that up for a while and worked for a very different goal.
She strutted herself in a black bikini as well as a white evening gown, played "White Water Chopsticks" on the piano for a panel of judges and voiced her issues on website security. And the next thing she knew, Teresa Scanlan was Miss America 2011.
We all know stereotypes follow pageant contestants around like a shadow, inescapable no matter what light the girl stands in. Contestants are known sometimes for answering questions with answers that sometimes are completely inappropriate or, in other words, dumb. But before we are too judgmental toward the contestants, do we even know much about the pageants themselves?
There are six pageants we have all probably heard of: Miss America, Miss Universe, Miss USA, Miss World, Miss Teen USA, and Outstanding Teen. There are also multiple types of pageants: full-glitz pageants, natural pageants, semi-glitz pageants, face pageants, scholarship pageants, co-ed pageants, online pageants and online photo shoots.
The Miss America pageant was recently aired on ABC earlier this January, crowning the Nebraska contestant a winner for the first time in its 90-year history.
Pageants have always been plagued with controversy, ever since 6-year-old pageant cutie JonBenet Ramsey was murdered on Christmas Eve in her parent's home back in 1996.
There were pictures of her wearing provocative outfits and making her an object of inappropriate sexual fantasies that were scrutinized heavily by the press.
Since this tragedy, child pageants have been under heavy scrutiny. Some claim beauty pageants are more for the parents than for the children.
But the purpose of this article is to shed the stereotypes I once believed in like a child believes in Santa Claus.
I recently shed my opinions after a girl from my high school, who was this year in my public speaking class, gave a speech about the importance of pageants and their purpose of shaping America's young women.
I had never really talked to her in high school; we just passed each other in the hallways. But I had always known she was hardcore into the beauty pageant scene, and from what I'd heard, she was good at it, too.
When she gave her speech that day, I made sure to pay attention. The Miss American Coed Pageants have awarded more than $12 million in scholarships and awards to women of many ages with qualities that help them become "the leaders of tomorrow."
Pageants help the women learn confidence, poise and sometimes give them an opportunity to make friends for life. According to the pageant center website, contestants' appearance is important, but no more so than their unique personality, ability to get along with others and their achievements."
It's true that pageant contestants have made IQ errors in the past, but not all of them can be judged for this mistake.
We need to get it through our heads that this scholarship opportunity is a character-building experience, and these contestants may end up being our lawyers. They may end up being our judges. And they may end up being our politicians. Despite certain beliefs, I have recently come to feel that pageants are not at all a joke; pageants are very serious for some.
We put all of our efforts into our sports, into our studies, into our video games. The only things these girls do differently is work hard for their image.

Miss World 2010 visits cancer patients in Manila

MANILA, Philippines - Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills of the USA didn't miss out on the opportunity to help others when she, together with Miss World 1st runner-up Emma Wareus of Botswana, visited two kids with cancer at the Ospital ng Makati last Monday.
Mills and Wareus visited Richard Belmes, 7, and Kurt Durian, 6, who both have acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at their tender age.
ALL is "the most common type of cancer in children," according to the medicinenet.com. It is cancer of the blood and bone marrow.
The two children have received support from the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, the beauty queens' official residence, through its Embrace CSR program.

Reto Klauser, general manager of Makati Shangri-La hotel, informed Mills and Wareus of the Embrace program, and invited them to visit the children when they have the chance.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Miss World chairperson Julia Morley, who accompanied Mills and Wareus as they toured the pediatric ward of Ospital ng Makati.
“Being at the children’s hospital is a good start to my first visit to the Philippines,” Mills said.

“Um dia me olhei no espelho e caiu a ficha. “Cortei doces e frituras do cardápio, comecei a praticar musculação, spinning e corrida e investi em drenagem linfática e massagem redutora.
branca”, fala a nutricionista.
driblar a vontade”, conta.
capricho no olho pretinho.

(CB)

2010 Miss World to visit Philippines for charity events

MANILA, Philippines — 2010 Miss World Alexandria Mills will visit the Philippines to help raise funds for charitable organizations in the country and other parts of Asia.

Mills, 18, of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, is believed to be the first Miss World to visit the country in the 60- year-old pageant.

No date has been announced on her arrival, but Mills will kick off her journey in the US, particularly in New York, where she helped raise funds for a children’s charity work.

Then, she proceeded to Los Angeles, California for a similar event.

After her US stint, Mills will fly to Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore to help oversee charity occasions in the Asian region and eventually help raise funds for charity.

"I am looking forward to everywhere I'm going. I never imagined I would be going to these places. I found out recently that my whole family has always wanted to go to Australia before, so they are very jealous!" Mills said, in a statement.

“And, of course, I will be taking my camera. I've just been to the shops to buy a new memory card so I can take even more photographs. I am also collecting some hand- blown glass earrings today that were made especially for me to match the Miss World crown, so I am looking forward to wearing those on my travels."

"But I am most looking forward to meeting so many people and getting involved with the incredible charity events around the world."

Mills will be accompanied by Miss World Africa Emma Wareus to help poor children around the world.

The teenage beauty queen has just graduated from high school when she won the pageant. She said that she wanted to become a teacher. Mills, a vegetarian, is a fashion model of the prestigious Elite Models’ Agency.

The arrival of Mills coincided with the recent announcement of beauty and wellness expert Cory Quirino as the new director for Miss World in the Philippines.

Julia Morley, president of the Miss World Organization, awarded the franchise to Fuel Excel (FE) International of Malaysia. Quirino is the FE ambassador in the Philippines.

Before that, the Bb. Pilipinas Charities sent representatives to the oldest running international pageant.

It would be recalled that the country has been sending candidates to the Miss World contest since 1966.

But the highest rank the Philippines has achieved was the first runner-up prize won by Evangeline Pascual in 1973.

the World 2000.

Youngest winner since first pageant in 1921; first ever from Cornhusker State

By OSKAR GARCIA
The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — A 17-year-old from Nebraska became the youngest winner of the Miss America crown in 90 years on Saturday after beating 52 other young women from across the United States.

Teresa Scanlan won a $50,000 scholarship and a yearlong run with the crown at the competition Saturday night at the Planet Hollywood casino-resort in Las Vegas, giving the Cornhusker State its first-ever win at the pageant.

She was the youngest Miss America since the pageant's first competition in 1921, when Margaret Gorman of the District of Columbia won at age 15.

Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady won $25,000 as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won $20,000 for third place.

Scanlan, a recent high school graduate from the western Nebraska town of Gering, planned to study American politics at Patrick Henry College in Virginia after her reign as Miss America.

She also hoped to attend law school, become a judge and eventually a politician, according to her pageant biography.

Scanlan won after strutting in a black bikini and a white evening gown, playing "White Water Chopped Sticks" on piano and telling the audience that when it comes to Wikileaks, security should come before public access to government information.

"You know when it came to that situation it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know, because it's so important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen and they must be handled properly," she said.

The pageant celebrated its 90th anniversary this year.

Just five contestants were asked questions during the interview portion of the show after 10 showcased their talents at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Those questioned were Scanlan; Fuselier, Eady, Miss Washington Jacquie Brown and Miss Oklahoma Emoly West.

The questions ranged in topics from health care to Wikileaks, the website.

That means the eliminated after the talent portion were Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley; Miss California Arianna Afsar; Miss Delaware Kayla Martell; Miss Virginia Caitlin Uze, and Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent.

Miss Texas Ashley Melnick and Miss New York Claire Buffie were dropped when the final 12 were trimmed to 10.

The contestants — from every state plus the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico — started the show by dancing up the aisles at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas while wearing silver cocktail dresses.

In her introduction to the audience, Bulkley dedicated her performance to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last week in Tucson. Bulkley called Giffords her mentor.

The finalists strutted across the stage in black bikinis, while a panel of seven judges eyed them for looks and fitness. The competition also includes evening gown, talent and interview portions, with eliminations along the way.

Miss America Pageant: Notable winners, stories, scandals

William Browning William Browning – Fri Jan 14, 4:44 pm ET

The Miss America pageant airs its 2011 show Saturday on ABC at 9 p.m. Eastern. Judges for this year's show include Joy Behar, former Miss America Debbye Turner Bell and fitness guru Marilu Henner.

Here's a look at the most notable winners, stories and scandals surrounding the famous beauty pageant.

Who has won the Miss America pageant more than once?

Mary Katherine Campbell is the only woman to win the Miss America pageant more than once. She defended her 1922 title with another win in 1923. In 1922, Campbell was in a field of 57 contestants that grew to 74 in 1923, making her feat even more remarkable. Since then, rules have been changed to make it possible to represent a state only once.

Who is the youngest winner of the Miss America pageant?

Marian Bergeron won the 1933 Miss America title when she was 15. Because the contest wasn't held in 1934, Bergeron retained her title for two years. Because of rule changes, the youngest Miss America in the modern era can be 17.

Has any Miss America overcome long odds?

Debbye Turner Bell won the Miss America pageant in 1990 after seven years competing in pageants. She is a motivational speaker and licensed veterinarian today, and she is also the only Miss Missouri to win the crown.

Another great win came in 1995 with Heather Whitestone from Alabama. She is the only deaf Miss America winner. She furthered many causes for deaf students and currently goes on speaking tours about overcoming similar odds. The former Miss America also is a spokesperson for several nonprofit organizations.

Why did Vanessa Williams resign in 1984?

Since Vanessa Williams won the Miss America pageant for 1984, she has become a famous singer, actress, designer and spokeswoman. In what was perhaps the biggest scandal of the Miss America pageant history, Williams resigned after nude photos appeared in "Penthouse" magazine without her consent.

The photos were taken two years before the pageant and Williams claims she never signed a release for them to be published. She sued "Penthouse" for $500 million, but Williams dropped the suit, according to the New York Times. Meanwhile, the scandal made the racy magazine an additional $14 million beyond its normal profits.

Amid pressure from sponsors threatening to pull out because of the photos, Williams resigned under pressure. She still got to keep the crown and money, and she remains the most recognizable Miss America in the United States today.

I am a positive person and I love to live life. Besides I have dreams that I am working very hard to achieve them. My hobbies are fine arts, music, dancing and drawing.
(2Q) When did you thought of preparing for Miss World pageant and any difficulties you face?
I have been approached and I thought about it for a while. Then I thought it would be an interesting experience and a chance seeing new places and nice way of meeting people. I believe when you are 21 years old, it is important to expend your view about the world.
(3Q) Please tell us about acting role in the Turkish TV series Yagmur Zamani what did you like about this role?
As my first television experience I considered it as an intense learning process. We had a great crew; I loved my character and the story.
(4Q)What are your future plans?
I hope to maintain my happiness and still be creative in performing arts. I have dreams of starting a family and traveling.
(5Q) Did you ever felt discouraged in life and if yes, what thoughts made you recover?
I started to feel discouraged in a period of less work coming my way. The unpredictability of work is a par of my job. I tried to talk about it and I soon saw an opportunity to learn something important. I tried to look inside and improve my self-understanding. To be happy and inner peace, despite life turning out different then you planned has been an important lesson for me.
In the period that work did not come very frequent, I tried to think that life is made of ups and downs and this was a chance for me to grow. I tried to look inside and first be happy with myself. Even everything goes wrong, when I manage to be happy with myself and maintain my inner peace, ups and downs of life affects me fewer and it improves my self- understanding. If you are comfortable in your own skin, you completely accept yourself both the good and bad and bigger problems become tiny ones.
(6Q) Please share with us your secret of staying in top shape?
At the moment I am competing in the Turkish version of Dancing With The Stars in Turkey, which gives me a great chance to have physical activity and fun. I love dancing, one of the reasons I prefer to go to stretch classes that are based on classical ballet. It gives me a total workout without getting bored. I also love swimming and I would like to start practicing yoga.
(7Q) Please tell us about your normal diet (eg. generally what do you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner).
It is crucial for me to start my day with a good breakfast. Breakfast varies from milk with cereals to bread with cheese, vegetables to fruit with yogurt. On any Sunday I will have a big Turkish breakfast.
I make sure I have my meals at regular times, 2-3 hours in between them. Usually at lunch and dinner I have protein with vegetables and whole grain bread. I try to change what I eat everyday. It also depends on physical activity, at the times when I feel like indulging in pizza, ice-cream, I do.
(8Q) Could you please tell us about your workout routine.
Actually it depends on my projects. Nowadays the Turkish version of Dancing With The Stars takes nearly most of my time. Every week we perform a different kind of dance and we make practices with our dancing coaches for the weekend’s show.
(9Q) How have you motivated yourself so long to eat healthy in daily life?
I think it comes from my childhood. I would eat meals my parents would prepare, which had a rich variety of food. In our culture we are used to eat lots of vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, bread etc. It is a life style to eat healthy. It provides my energy and happiness.
(10Q) What message/advice would you like to give to our obesity campaign UK readers as how they can get rid of obesity?
I would like to mention that I am not a health professional and can not give advices. In my opinion, it is important to become conscious about the seriousness and dangerous effects of obesity. I think it is crucial to search for the causes such as genetic, physical or physiological in order to find the right treatment or ways to be healthy and happy.
Thank you very much for your time Azra. :-)
